What is an Interior Architect?

Working across almost every building type, Interior Architects are responsible for pretty much everything to do with the building of interior spaces, from electrical and plumbing requirements to materials, finishing and the intelligent use of space. Combining technical knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills, Interior Architects frequently collaborate with engineers, electricians and building contractors to ensure that designs are safe, functional and meet construction requirements.

Duties of an Interior Architect

Working in a team of Interior Designers and Architects, typical responsibilities include establishing requirements of the project with clients, colleagues and contractors, working with suppliers to source materials for fittings, furniture, lighting and decorations, providing an accurate schedule and cost for the project, often working alongside quantity surveyors, creating working designs, models and plans for the space, and providing sketched examples and mood boards for clients.

Skills and Competencies

As a key member of the design team, you must be a strong team player, with great communication skills and the ability to work flexibly. Interior Architects must be able to read blueprints, understand building codes, and must be strong technical designers with experience delivering interior designs to meet brand and operational standards. Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite, CAD and Sketch Up are prerequisites.
