What is an Urban Design Director?
In Urban Design Directors jobs you are responsible for full leadership of the urban design function within a planning consultancy or architectural practice. The role is part of the practice’s senior management team and plays a key part in the strategic planning of the organisation. With an abundance of urban design experience and a portfolio of highly successful schemes, the role balances creativity and technical knowledge with strategic vision and the ability to motivate and inspire those around them.

Duties of an Urban Design Director
As a strategic leader, the role has full responsibility for the development and direction of a studio’s urban design offering, playing a key role in the practice’s overall growth strategy. As an executive member of staff, you will be expected to lead projects through all stages, develop both new and existing client relationships, prepare proposals for new projects and mentor urban design teams.
Skills and Competencies
A track record in shaping, directing and delivering large scale schemes gained through a successful career in urban design is fundamental. Typically, the role will require an ability to lead complex negotiations with clients, contractors and community groups – and present work at formal design reviews – therefore, a confident and charismatic personality is a highly beneficial trait. On top of this, outstanding business development capabilities, team management skills and experience of leading, motivating and developing staff are highly desirable skills.
