    What is an Urban Designer?

Urban Designers shape the built environment around us. As a profession in its own right, it’s a relatively new role, especially when compared to centuries old professions such as Architecture. Lying somewhere between the planning and architecture, Urban Design is all about improving the fabric of urban environments to create better places and communities.

    Duties of an Urban Designer

Day-to-day activities can be extremely diverse but you will usually be working alongside Senior Urban Designers, with typical responsibilities including the production of feasibility studies, design strategies and packages for projects of varying scales and complexities. Urban Designers will also participate in the development of conceptual designs, the preparation of large scale masterplans and urban design studies.

    Skills and Competencies

Strong design ability is essential for this role, along with the ability to think creatively and with imagination. Urban Designers are in the business of creating better places to live and work in, therefore an interest in communities, urban development and even politics are all highly beneficial attributes. On top of this, excellent communication skills, report writing ability and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, CAD and Sketch Up.
